Macfarlanes is a leading City law firm practising at the forefront of many areas of commercial endeavour.  We are instructed by major businesses, industrial enterprises and high net worth individuals who appreciate the distinctive benefits of working with a firm which offers a cohesive and focused approach.  Much of our work is international, and we act in complex cross-border transactions and international disputes.  Many of our lawyers have spent time working abroad, and there are opportunities to work overseas on specific projects or take up secondments with foreign law firms with which we have established close relationships. The firm’s areas of practice are broadly defined under the four main headings of corporate; real estate; litigation and dispute resolution; and private client.

We believe that the strongest firm will be achieved by choosing a mix of people – reflecting different styles so as to meet the needs that we – and our varied range of clients – will have in the future.  Of course we need intelligence and imagination but we are also looking, in all our trainees, for a high level of self reliance, energy and enthusiasm.  These three things are key to coping with the demanding environment into which they will be plunged from the beginning.  Anyone joining Macfarlanes cannot expect to lose themselves in the crowd.  Because there are fewer of us, each individual is expected to play their part and everyone’s contribution counts.

We want people who can rise to a challenge and relish the responsibilities that will inevitably be thrust upon them. There are other benefits attached to working in a firm of our size:  It helps us retain an informal working atmosphere – people quickly get to know one another and are on first name terms across the board. There is the sense of community that comes from working closely together in smaller teams. We all have a vested interest in getting the best out of each other, including our trainees.

We regard our Easter and summer vacation schemes as an important opportunity for communicating to prospective trainees what day-to-day life is really like in a City solicitor's office.  There is no better way of learning about the practice of a lawyer in the City of London than trying it out first hand.  As a Vacation Student you will spend two weeks at Macfarlanes.  Each week you will sit with a partner, solicitor or trainee solicitor who will seek to involve you in the business of the week. You will be briefed on matters in hand and may find yourself in a conference with Counsel, attending meetings with clients or doing any of the other tasks which a trainee solicitor is called upon to do from day to day.

Applications are welcomed from both law and non-law undergraduates expecting to graduate with at least a 2:1.
