 About Us

Shearman & Sterling is recognised as one of the leading international corporate and commercial law firms in London.  Our ability to offer integrated English and US legal advice across a broad range of practices has made us one of the most successful US firms in the UK market.

Our main areas of work include European Corporate (including Mergers & Acquisitions, Intellectual Property & US Capital Markets), Project Development & Finance, European Finance (including Capital Markets, Structured, Acquisition & Leveraged Finance), International Litigation & Arbitration, Antitrust, Tax, Financial Institutions Advisory & Asset Management, Property and Executive Compensation & Employee Benefits

Headquartered in New York, we also have offices in Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Menlo Park, Milan, Munich, New York, Paris, Rome, San Francisco, São Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Toronto and Washington D.C.

In London, we represent major UK and international companies and financial institutions.  We are ideally placed to work closely with our offices in the Americas, continental Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to advise clients on complex corporate transactions.  These capabilities have contributed to substantial growth in the business and size of the office, making the London office instrumental to our European practice.

In the London office, there are approximately 120 lawyers, and 21 trainees.
The number of lawyers staffing deals is smaller than what you may expect from an office working on deals of this level.  The result is a team of lawyers who have generalist capabilities and who are consistently challenged at every level of their career

Training Contract

During the 2 year training contract, trainees have 4 seat rotations, with 6 months spent in each seat.  At least two of these seats will be completed in our core practice areas:

·
European Corporate

·                European Finance

·                Project Development & Finance

The remaining two seats will be allocated on trainee preference and business need, so you get to really consider which areas you may like to get exposure to.  The global nature of the firm also allows for one of the four rotations to be completed overseas, in offices such as New York, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, or Singapore.

The size of the London office means that trainees are trusted with significant responsibility early on in their training contract.  As part of small teams, trainees work with a range of individuals, from partners, to counsel to associates.  Partners are very accessible to trainees, with many acting as supervisors or sharing an office with a trainee.  This ensures that trainees learn from a range of people, all who have proved very successful in their field.

Summer Placement Scheme

Throughout June and July, we run a summer placement scheme that is designed to give participants a true insight into life at Shearman & Sterling London.

We offer up to 30 participants the opportunity to spend 2 weeks with the firm, getting to grips with the work a trainee may be exposed to, as well as seeing the social side of the firm.

During your 2 weeks with Shearman & Sterling you will be allocated to one practice group where you will work with a supervisor, mentor and partner contact.

An induction at the start of your placement will introduce you to the practice groups, partners and associates you will become familiar with during your placement, as well as giving you the opportunity to get to know your peers.  After the initial 2 days you will go into your practice group where you will be given a variety of work to complete, as well as taking part in group activities and socials to give you a feel for life in the office.

At the end of your time with us, you will have a review meeting with a partner and HR who will evaluate your placement and overall performance, as well as getting your feedback on the scheme.
