Each year, the University of Bristol Law Club runs mooting competitions kindly sponsored by Herbert Smith. Mooting can best be described as a mock court case in which a debate occurs over a point of law. The competitors’ roles are that of barristers, pleading their case in court with two competitors pleading each side. The competition runs during the first two terms, with the successful mooters from each round going through to the next. Each round is judged either by a real life judge, barrister or lecturer from the faculty.

Although this may sound overwhelming we can guarantee you that mooting is an extremely natural progression from your academic studies and it is truly satisfying to see what you have learnt being applied. A common misconception is that mooting is only undertaken by those aspiring to be barristers – this is not the case. Mooting is an extremely enjoyable activity which improves public speaking skills, gives a more thorough understanding of legal knowledge and looks fantastic on your CV.

In addition to this, mooting is also highly sociable. After each round all competitors are treated to a (highly subsidised!) three course meal and drinks at a fabulous restaurant. This gives an opportunity to relax after the competition, socialise with other students and perhaps even meet a future employer!

We run competitions for First, Second and Third Years respectively. We also enter a team in the inter-varsity mooting competition. To participate in these competitions, keep an eye on your email for information on how to sign up.
