Key Dates

5th March -
Election Hustings

All candidates running for elections must attend the hustings. Each candidate must prepare for the following:
1. 2-3 (max) speech about their vision, goals and/or candidacy.
2. Live questioning by incumbent committee member of your position.

6th March - 9:00AM
Voting Opens

All candidates may now start publicly campaigning for elections.

11th March - 21:00PM
Voting Ends

Polls will be closed and votes will be verified and counted.

13th March -
Election Results Night

This will be a joint results evening with Bar Society and Pro Bono Society.

How to Run & Election Rules

 

Committee Positions & Job Descriptions

PRESIDENT

  • Oversee and coordinate all UBLC activities
  • Manage relationships with sponsors, the society Patron, the university and the Law School
  • Produce the sponsorship brochure and secure sponsorship for the society
  • Represent UBLC and its members to all external bodies (e.g. Staff-Student Liaison committee, the Alumni committee, etc.) and at external events
  • Organise events for previous Young Alumni
  •  Chair committee meetings 
  • Delegate duties amongst committee members as s/he sees fit
  • Interview and select students for Year Reps and any Committee positions that subsequently become available
  • Responsible for the creation of the First Year Handbook

*You will be required to attend a 3 week sponsorship tour to London in early summer 2018.

VICE-PRESIDENT

  • Work closely with and support the President in his/her duties
  • Manage relationships with sponsors, at the President’s discretion
  • Assist the President in securing sponsorship for the society
  • Represent the UBLC at external events
  • Organise the Freshers' Trip
  • Coordinate Law School visit days.

*You will be required to attend a 3 week sponsorship tour to London in early summer 2018.

TREASURER

  • Oversee all UBLC accounts 
  • Set and approve budgets for all UBLC events throughout the year 
  • Advise committee members on financial decisions for their respective events
  • Interview and select candidates for the Spring Law Ball Committee and co-ordinate the event alongside the Chair and Vice-Chair.
  • Liaise with UBU for all finance-related matters 
  • Liaise with sponsors for all sponsorship payments and related activities

GENERAL SECRETARY

  • Be the first point of contact for the UBLC. Answer all queries from both members and outside bodies / organisations
  • Compile, format and send a weekly newsletter to all members detailing upcoming UBLC activities and events
  • Organise weekly committee meetings by booking rooms in the Wills Memorial Building, and ensuring all committee members are aware where and when the meetings are taking place.
  • Produce meeting minutes and record absentees.
  • Maintain an updated membership list (found on the Student’s Union website) for checking of memberships during ticket sales for UBLC events etc.
  • Managing the society’s event blacklist policy
  • Assist with additional miscellaneous tasks and responsibilities regarding specific events organised by the committee throughout the year.

PRESS SECRETARY

  • Production of all online marketing material, Facebook event cover photos, posters, thumbnails, twitter banners. (Templates can be provided.)
  • Daily presence on all social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, Snapchat, YouTube, Blog, Website newsfeed.
  • Oversee all UBLC event promotion, providing support to all committee members in the marketing and ticket sales of events. 
  • Provide creative design support to all UBLC Publications: Commercial Law Guide, Freshers Handbook, Sponsorship Brochure. 

*Required to have digital editing or photoshop and basic website design skills. Candidates are encouraged to provide evidence of design skills in manifesto or portfolio. 

  

CAREERS SECRETARY (x2)

  • Organise informal networking events (e.g. booking venues, liaising with law firms, selecting students)
  • Organise sponsor skills workshops, drop-in sessions and open days
  • Organise the Annual Careers Dinner
  • Edit and update the Commercial Law Guide
  • Promote careers opportunities/events on Facebook groups

SOCIAL SECRETARY (x2)

  • Organise all socials including the Freshers’ Party, Winter Law Ball and Abroad Trip!
  • Publicise and promote all events to as many members as possible 
  • Organise ticket sales and collections

MASTER & MISTRESS OF THE MOOT (x2)

  • Organise and administrate the First Year Mooting competition
  • Organise and administrate the Second Year Mooting competition 
  • Liaise with the sponsor of the Mooting competition 
  • Organise launch nights, demonstration moots and Q&As
  • Organise all meals and drinks etc. 

* The Master and Mistress must run as a pair. Despite the formal title, there need not be one male or one female. There may be two males (Masters of the Moot) or two females (Mistresses of the Moot). Candidates must have competed in the UBLC mooting competition previously.

SENIOR MASTER & MISTRESS OF THE MOOT (x2)

  • Organise and administrate the Third Year Mooting competition
  • Liaise with the sponsor of the mooting competition
  • Organise launch nights, demonstration moots and Q&As
  • Organise all meals and drinks etc.
  • Assist the Mistress/Master of the Moot

*The Senior Master and Mistress must run as a pair. Despite the formal title, there need not be one male or one female. There may be two males (Masters of the Moot) or two females (Mistresses of the Moot).  Candidates must have competed in the UBLC mooting competition previously. Applicants must be third year or above.

CHAIR OF THE DEBATE

  • Organise the Hunt Cup debating competition 
  • Select Vice Chair of the Debate (with approval from the President and Vice President of the UBLC) 
  • Organise other debating opportunities

DIVERSITY & INCLUSIVITY OFFICER

  • Organise workplace diversity workshops
  • Organise the annual Women in Law Conference, Diversity Fair, Diversity and Inclusivity Week and any other diversity-related activities
  • Keep up to date with external diversity events and opportunities
  • Collate and distribute information regarding work opportunities outside of the UK (e.g. in Hong Kong, Singapore, Continental Europe, etc.)
  • Co-ordinate and organise inclusive and diversity feedback forum(s)

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT OFFICER

  • Organise events catered toward international students (Boston Tea Party Brunch, Coffee and Cake welcoming event)
  • Assist and help organise the Diversity Fair and Inclusivity Week
  • Keep updated with external diversity events and opportunities
  • Distribute information regarding work opportunities outside the UK

MALE & FEMALE SPORTS REPRESENTATIVES

  • Maintain sports teams
  • Organise consistent training throughout the year
  • Organise inter-mural matches
  • Organise the sports tour
  • Liaise with other Law Societies to arrange inter-varsity sports events
  • Liaise with law firms to arrange sports days

* Male and Female Sports Reps need not run as a pair. Both the Male and Female Sports Reps must have previously played on a UBLC sports team.

POST-GRADUATE CHAIR

  • Organise Postgraduate Mooting Competition
  • Represent Postgraduate UBLC members at committee meetings and events
  • Organise Postgraduate socials and events

* Only Postgraduate students are eligible to apply for this position.

NON-LAW OFFICER

  • Promote the society to non-law members by doing lecture shout outs etc.
  • Represent the interests of non-law students on the UBLC Committee
  • Organise events with sponsor firms targeting and providing opportunities for non-law students
  • Organise events to assist non-law students with applications
  • Be a point of contact for non-law students needing help with applications
  • Support the careers secretaries in providing non-commercial law opportunities for members, including updating the non-commercial law guide
