Marking 150 years since it first formed in Chicago, Sidley Austin is one of the world’s largest full-service law firms. With approximately 1,800 lawyers practicing on four continents (North America, Europe,  Australasia and Asia), the firm provides a broad range of integrated services to meet the needs of its clients across a multitude of industries.

The Work

The firm’s work is broadly split between transactional, regulatory and litigation teams. In London , the office’s finance and corporate practices account for a fair amount of the work., followed by areas like dispute resolution, restructuring and regulatory. The corporate team's deals tend to be high-value and cross-border. One recent matter saw the team liaise with counsel in France, Germany, Jersey, Luxembourg and Sweden: together they helped to create a €4 billion joint venture for Swedish pension funds Första AP-Fonden and Andra AP-Fonden, which will invest in commercial property.

Trainee Profile

Sidley Austin LLP looks for ambitious, intelligent and enthusiastic individuals with personality and humour who have a real interest in practising law in the commercial world. Trainees should have a consistently strong academic record and a 2:1 degree (not necessarily in law). Trainees will be encouraged to take responsibility where appropriate. Regular meetings with supervisors  ensuring  both the quality and quantity of a trainee’s experience. In addition, there is a structured timetable of training on a cross-section of subjects.


The firm is now looking to take on 12 new starters, up from the 10 it has traditionally recruited.
